The Sidney churches presented “Getting S’More of Jesus” vacation Bible school for ages 4 years and up on June 9 and June at the Sidney Christian Church. A cookout was held on June 9, and a VBS day camp was held on June 10.

Training teaches about AirLife helicopter safety
A total of 20 firefighters from local departments joined in the AirLife Landing Zone (LZ) training on June 24 in Sidney.
Members from Homer, Longview, St. Joseph-Stanton and Sidney fire departments were present. Lt. Grant Bennett of the Sidney fire department and the AirLife staff organized the training.

Sidney Summer Fun Daze coming
This year’s Sidney Summer Fun Daze will feature more seating, more parking and a new bike giveaway.
The demolition of the town hall building has eliminated the main indoor venue for the event. The area where the building used to stand will now have more picnic tables available for people to sit and rest.

Water system sale plan put in motion
The village is taking the first steps toward selling its water system.
The village board hired Farnsworth Group to prepare a proposal for preparing bid packets to sell the system.
Under the Small System Viability Act, a large utility can acquire a system like Sidney’s at fair market value. The legislation sunsets in mid-2018.
Giving Place pushing carts in Sidney parade
The Giving Place will be pushing grocery carts in the Sidney Fun Daze Parade on Saturday, July 29.
Bring nonperishable food items to drop in the carts as they pass by to help replenish the food pantry shelves. The Giving Place serves all those living in the Unit 7 school district.

Library requests audit
New Sidney Library Director Rosemary McCarrey has asked for the library to be included in the village’s financial audit program.
The library has not been audited for 15 years, McCarrey reported, but does not have the budget to pay for an independent audit, which would cost $6,500. The village board agreed to put her request on next month’s agenda.

Sidney firefighters donate $1,200 to cancer institute
The Sidney Fire Department donated $1,200 to the Mills Breast Cancer Institute following a month-long fundraiser.
The department sold T-shirts, the back of which sported the message, “Support the Fighter/Admire the Survivor/Honor the Taken/Never Lose Hope.” Redneck Apparel, which makes all such clothing for the department, crafted the shirts.

Water system’s value to be assessed
The village board has hired a consultant to provide a recommendation on whether or not to sell the village’s 77-year-old water system.
The board Monday voted to spend up to $5,000 to have Florida-based consultant Gerald Hartman evaluate the condition, expenses and value of the system and to determine if it makes sense to sell it.
Most popular 2017 baby names revealed
The most popular name for newborn boys in southern Champaign County is now Henry, and for girls Anna and Grace are tied for top honors.
According to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, five newborn boys went home from the hospital last year with the name Henry.

The Sidney Improvement Group hosted its annual Shop at Home event on Dec. 9 at Unity East Elementary School. Over 30 small businesses were represented, and there were cash drawings held each hour.
