The Sidney Township Board on Monday accepted a $26,600 bid from the low bidder, Razmus Demolition Services of Chrisman, to demolish the Sidney Town Hall.
The township held a bid opening at 2 p.m. on July 22 at the community building. Four other companies bid on the project; the next lowest bids were $32,749 from Lee Farms Excavating of Onarga and $39,749.

The churches of Sidney hosted VBS Day Camp 2016 for ages 4 years and up, with the theme “Go Tell It on the Mountain!” Aug. 6 at Countryside United Methodist Church. There was a kickoff event with food and games for the whole family on Aug. 5. Day Camp for ages 4 years and up will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 6.

A landmark building with over 100 years of history was erased from the downtown landscape Aug. 22.
Trustees not forcing removal of dog
Sidney resident Gayla Sargent spoke during the public comments portion of the meeting to make a special plea for her dog, Bear, who was classified as a dangerous dog by Champaign County Animal Control in June in connection with the dog escaping her yard and encountering a neighbor dog next door.
Resident worried about public safety
Sidney resident Darren Frields came to the village board meeting Monday with concerns about public safety.
Frields said he often seeds motorists speeding, disregarding stop signs and engaging in dangerous behavior on golf carts, four-wheelers, go carts and utility vehicles.
“There is a problem,” Frields said.

Split of ex-lawmaker’s estate mulled over
The village board will decide at its February meeting whether to allow retired congressman Tim Johnson’s former estate to be subdivided.
Building plan on hold for now
Village officials are waiting to hear from Sidney Township representatives before moving forward on plans for a shared building.
The two government entities have been in discussion about building a combined township hall and village hall on the former Sidney Grade School property at the corner of East Byron and South Washington streets.
Water company’s rate hike may trickle down
Sidney water customers may see an increase in their water bill soon.
Village President Chuck White reported that the Illinois Commerce Commission had approved a 14.7-percent rate increase request from Illinois-American Water Co., Sidney’s water supplier. The rate increase went into effect Jan. 1.

Water rates rise; more set
The village board has raised water rates to cover the cost of a 15-percent increase from supplier Illinois American Water.
The current minimum rate for the first 2,000 gallons is $22 and will increase to $24.50. The rate per 1,000 gallons over the minimum will rise from $11 to $12.50.

Sidney to conduct water rate study
The village will spend $8,150 to have Farnsworth Group do a water rate study.
“It’s a lot of money, and I’m not looking forward to spending it,” Trustee Troy Roberts said. “But even if we don’t contract with them, we have to figure out something.”

Sidney water committee to meet
The village’s water committee will meet as the next step after an engineering firm presented the village board with information to help them determine how much to raise rates to fund needed infrastructure improvements.
Village staff provided five years’ worth of financial statements, budgets and usage data to Farnsworth Group Engineering Manager Michael Friend.
Solar company surveys prospects
The commercial solar industry is courting the Sidney area for energy production.
Cypress Creek Renewables, based in Santa Monica, Calif., contacted the village asking what its regulations would be for a solar farm. Village officials are reviewing solar farm ordinances from Kankakee and Livingston County for guidelines.

Sidney spared from major flooding woes
The heavy rains last week weren’t as harmful to Sidney as they have often been in the past.
As of Thursday afternoon, the only streets closed in the town were David, the main downtown street, and North Scarborough Street.
“The water’s going down right now, and the rain has stopped,” Supervisor of Operations Earl Bennett said.

13th Fun Daze festival this weekend
A karaoke contest, a petting zoo and a cake walk will be among the new attractions at the 13th annual Sidney Fun Daze festival, scheduled for Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30.
“We tried to add more things for the kids,” Sidney Improvement Group President Mike Roy said.
Moo Thru comes to Dairy Barn
A Sidney business has added a drive-thru as a way of keeping up with customer demand.
The Sidney Dairy Barn held a ribbon cutting with the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce last week for its new Moo Thru.
Owner Dennis Riggs said there are typically 40 to 50 people in line on the weekends.

Community building plans on hold
Plans for a shared village/township building have stalled.
Sidney Village President Chuck White told the village board Monday that he had attended the last Sidney Township board meeting to talk about plans for a building that would replace the community building that serves as the village hall and the township hall, which was demolished last August due to mold problems.
Countryside 10K goes on with changes
Under new management, the Countryside 10K road race was held June 3.
Formerly a Champaign County Farm Bureau Foundation fundraiser for ag literacy and education, the race was taken over this year by the Second Wind Running Club.
The start and finish were at Witt Park, and the course was kept the same as previous years, on country roads.
