On a warm and windy Memorial Day, locals gathered at ceremonies throughout the area to remember those who paid the ultimate price for the nation’s freedom.
At Mount Hope Cemetery in Sidney, American Legion Post 433 hosted a ceremony that featured Pastor Mike Picklesimer of the Sidney United Church as the speaker.

Sidney Fun Daze celebrated
The community of Sidney celebrated summer with the annual Sidney Summer Fun Daze festival on July 24 and 25.
Unity East Elementary School fourth-grade teacher named principal
Jim Carver is the new principal at Unity East Elementary School, but he’s not new to the school.
Carver has taught fourth grade there for the last six years.
“I’m excited to be continuing my career here,” Carver said.

Library seeks project help
Sidney Community Library officials are asking the village board for financial help with an upcoming roof replacement project.
“We had a leak that did some minor damage,” Library Board President Tom Talbott told the village board Monday.
The library has gotten estimates from Advanced Roofing and Ryan Roofing that the work will cost between $27,000 and $37,000.
A very Sidney Christmas
The Sidney Shop at Home event was held Dec. 5 at Unity East Elementary School. The event was sponsored by the Sidney Improvement Group.
Post offices having coloring contest
Grab a Charlie Brown coloring page, and for every page that is returned to be displayed at the Philo or Sidney post office, you will be entered into a drawing for a box full of gifts. The drawing will be held on Monday, Dec. 21.

Dr. Martin Koeck III passed away last Thursday at the age of 91. He was Sidney’s town physician from 1950 until he retired in 1994.

Board not donating to July festival
It looks like the village will not be donating towards Sidney Summer Fun Daze this year.
In previous years, the village has typically donated between $4,000 and $5,000 to the Sidney Improvement Group (SIG), which organizes the festival held the last weekend in July.
Trustee Cyndi McCloud said that since SIG has about $10,000 in the bank, she couldn’t justify a donation.
13th Fun Daze festival this weekend
A karaoke contest, a petting zoo and a cake walk will be among the new attractions at the 13th annual Sidney Fun Daze festival, scheduled for Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30.
“We tried to add more things for the kids,” Sidney Improvement Group President Mike Roy said.
Trustees discuss building’s condition
The future of the village’s community building is uncertain.
Superintendent of Operations Earl Bennett said that a couple of weeks ago, he discovered that the roof was leaking on the building at 221 S. David St. and that water was standing in the light fixtures.
